Avian Influenza Precaution Measures - How this may affect your visit

You may or may not be aware that there has recently been outbreaks of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) around the UK.

Here at the Tropical Butterfly House, we are taking precautionary measures to protect the bird species in our care from the disease.

We already have bio-security measures in place, such as foot dips and disinfecting protocols. We have had to change the ways the birds are fed as to not attract wild birds in the area, but we are also taking the following further actions:

All free roaming birds including chickens, peacocks and guineafowl are being housed indoors in a safe place along with our black swans. As such the farm barn will now be closed to visitors to prevent wild birds from entering. Poultry food will not be available to purchase as any spillages would attract wild birds.

The butterfly house is currently not accessible to the public due to covid restrictions, but we may keep closed to safeguard the rainbow lorikeets and other birds if these restrictions are downgraded.

Bio-security measures are in place for all the other aviary birds which will continue to be visible to visitors while we monitor the situation.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused but our animals’ welfare and safety is paramount and therefore we are taking necessary actions to prevent the risk of our birds from contracting the disease.

Thank you for your understanding.
