Vampire Crabs!

Just in time for Halloween!

The centre now have Vampire Crabs, originally from Indonesia, Vampire Crabs are bright red and their shells will only grow up to 20-25mm in size. Interestingly they are the only crabs that will breed in fresh water only.

Two new species of Vampire Crabs; Geosesarma dennerle and Geosesarma hagen, were discovered in 2015. They were found in separate river valleys on the Indonesian island of Java.

Vampire Crabs don’t actually feed on blood; their name comes from the colour of their eyes and the fact that they hunt with voracity at twilight.

You can see them in the Butterfly House by the pond, they're in an enclosure with Fruit Beetles and Millipedes.
