25th Anniversary celebrations

Hundreds of visitors joined us in celebrating its 25th anniversary on Saturday 23 March.

Celebrations started with a birthday cake for the animals and fun activities throughout the day including stilt walkers, face-painting and a fun family trail around the park.

A special anniversary programme of bird and animal displays took place including a talk about the centre’s longest-standing resident – Darwin the Spectacled Caiman – and visitors learned about the origins of the Butterfly House and how it all began. The park is renowned for its collection of exotic animals and endangered species from around the world but originally came from humble beginnings and started out with just a butterfly house, a nature trail and a small café and shop.

Kim Bellis, managing director and daughter of the founder and owner, speaks of the centre’s success:

“I am thrilled that so many people joined us to help celebrate our 25th anniversary weekend. Living and working here all my life, I see that so much has changed since we opened in 1994 and I could not be more proud of my dad and the amazing staff who have worked so hard over the years to make us the wonderful attraction we are today.

And 25 years on my dad’s labour of love is still to promote and conserve the natural world around us and beyond. The ethos of the Tropical Butterfly House is just as it was when it all began, to inspire the next generation’s passion for nature. It really shows that if you work hard enough your dreams really do come true”.
