Harvest mice find new home here at the park

We have some exciting news for native wildlife enthusiasts. Our Director and Conservation Manager, Jo, has relocated a cute group of harvest mice to their new home here at the park. These tiny treasures, a mix of males and females, arrived safely from White Post Farm and Woburn Safari Park.

You can now find them settling into their outdoor enclosure located beside our wildlife pond, a stone's throw from Meerkat Mansion. We've created an ideal habitat for these tiny creatures and we're thrilled to welcome them to our ever-growing family of native wildlife.

But the story doesn't end there! We have high hopes for a successful breeding programme here at the park, if we are fortunate we plan to undertake a carefully managed, slow release of these native mice into one of our local wildlife conservation sites. This site has already shown promising signs of being a suitable habitat, making it the perfect location for these little pioneers.

Did you know? Harvest mice are the UK's smallest native rodents. They have a prehensile tail which acts like a fifth limb, allowing them to grip onto grasses and stems with incredible dexterity. These tiny herbivores (and insectivores!) enjoy a varied diet, feasting on seeds, grasses, fruits, grains and even small insects and are as light as a feather weighing in at a mere 6-8 grams!

So next time you're visiting, take a moment to peek into their enclosure and try to spot these elusive little residents - you might just be treated to a glimpse of these miniature marvels!
