Witness a bit of magic in our seed tank!

Here in our propagation room the horticulture team are carefully germinating Sacred Lotus seeds. It’s a delicate process involving nicking their hard coat with a sharp blade to allow the water to penetrate them. Water must be kept at a balmy 28°C and 12 hours of daylight is required for the seeds to germinate.

Our head gardener Rachel says “We start them off on a windowsill propagator and once we see signs of the seedling starting to emerge, we plant them submerged in 10cm of water. Once they are large enough, we replant them in the Butterfly House Pond as you can see Maddy doing here.
We're also trying our hand at growing Giant Amazon water lilies from seed for the first time! It’s a very similar technique and we are excited to see how this develops. If we succeed, you’ll see the giant lily pad leaves in our Butterfly house pond later in the year!”
