Great British Wildlife Restoration shortlist

We are thrilled that we have been selected as one of the 26 British zoos and aquariums to be shortlisted as part of the BIAZA Great British Wildlife Restoration 2026.

The BIAZA Great British Wildlife Restoration is a celebration of the conservation of native species in the British Isles. The competition aims to raise politicians’ awareness of the work of conservationists. Members of Parliament and the Lords will vote for their favourite project with the winner announced at a special parliamentary reception.

We have made the shortlist for our continuing work at the Grindleford conservation site. Since acquiring 26.5 acres of flood meadow and grassland in 2019, the Grindleford Project has been restoring and protecting native habitats. The site, rich with springs, streams and bogs, is an ideal setting for conservation, supporting birds, small mammals, amphibians, pollinators and large herbivores like a herd of wild red deer!

Key actions include reintroducing wildflowers, removing invasive species and managing grazing. Over 150 bird boxes have been installed, and in 2023, part of the flood meadow was wetted to strengthen the natural ecosystem.

We will keep you posted! Find out more here.
